Last year, I had the pleasure of guiding students through a book conference simulation in which students played a character from a book they had read and discussed the challenges that their character overcame. I am happy to bring this conference to my 6th graders this year and the following people have been selected as book conference facilitators, speakers, and event managers.

Book Conference
A few reminders: The added chapter must be written on your own paper. It needs to be at least one page double spaced typed (two handwritten double spaced pages). Your added chapter cannot exceed 2 typed pages (4 handwritten)
* The book conference packet and all material need to brought to class on May 8th
* Wearing a costume will earn you 5 extra credit points (costumes must be school appropriate)
* The artifact that you bring must also be school appropriate
Map Packet: Due Monday!
Here are few hints on the map packet:
* Yucatan Canal should really be the Yucatan Channel
* On page 4, Baja California and Barbados will have to be drawn in by you.

Don't forget to visit the book fair in the library. Books are by one get one free!!

Remember that portfolio conferences are this week. Please bring your parent/guardian to conferences during your scheduled time to share with them all your hard work!
Canada Presentations
Canada Presentations are finally done! AM Core's map is already up on the wall and PM will be putting theirs up tomorrow.
Canada Test
The Canada test was given today, students could use their presentation notes. This was a challenging test (with many student complaints), if you would like to make up any test I have given, please do so ASAP.
Central and South America
With Canada behind us, we will be studying Central and South America. Your first task is to complete the Central and South America map packet. The first two pages need to be colored and all countries need to be labeled. Pages three and four are physical maps, please follow directions and fill them out accordingly. This packet is due on Monday, April 30, 2007. The first map quiz will be on May 1st!
Book Conference
For the last book report of the year, students will be completing a simulation called the International Federation of Characters Conference (IFCC). This conference will allow students to role play a character from their book as they discuss the focus topic of "meeting challenges" The book conference will begin on May 9th and all materials are due in class on May 8th.
**Don't forget to finish your portfolio letter, it is due on Wednesday (4th period only)!!

Your portfolio letter rough draft is due on WEDNESDAY.
Here are some things to think about/consider as you draft your letter.
1. Proper letter format must be used (this website will help you format your letter)
2. Letter must be at least 2 paragraphs long
3. Rough draft is due Wednesday. Final draft will be written in class on Wednesday & Thursday
4. Answer the following questions (as best you can):
a. How have you grown this year in your skills (reading, writing, thinking, math, speaking etc)
b. Your academic areas of greatest strength and weakness
c. Any goals that you set for yourself this year and the extent to which you met these goals.
d. Anything you learned about yourself this year, especially patterns you notice after reviewing your portfolio pieces.
e. Any academic goals that you have for next year
If you have any questions, please post them in the comments section and I will respond as soon as possible.
