Ugly Duckling Seminar

Seminar date: December 13, 2013
Seminar prep period: December 11, 2013

Here are the questions you will need:

1. Do you think Great-Aunt Malkin’s gift to Camilla was a good idea? Why or why not?  How might Camilla’s life have been different if her beauty had not been hidden?

2. How would the world be changed if everyone looked exactly the same?

3.  What attitudes are presented in this play about outer beauty?  About inner beauty?  How are the attitudes of the chancellor, the king and queen, Great-Aunt Malkin, the princess herself and Prince Simon similar and different?

Things to keep in mind:
  • Speak so that all can hear you
  • Listen closely
  • Speak without raising hands
  • Refer to the text
  • Talk to each other and the middle of the circle, not just the leader
  • Ask others for clarification. Don’t stay confused
  • Invite and allow others to speak
  • Consider all viewpoints and ideas
  • Know that you are responsible for the quality of the seminar
How will the seminar be graded?
1. Student notes will be collected and checked for completeness but will not be graded

2. Students will be graded using the following rubric:
