Idioms

Have you ever heard someone say that "people who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones" maybe you've even said it yourself! This my young friends is what we call an idiom.  Idioms are sayings that have a hidden meaning...we'll be learning about idioms next week, but until then, I wanted to share with you an interesting list of "modern and updated idioms" from Wired magazine.  Recognize where any of these might have come from?
  • Hindsight is always 1080p.
  • One #hashtag does not a trending topic make.
  • Too many hosts spoil the podcast.
  • That’s a hard act to unfollow.
  • 140 characters to the wise is sufficient.
  • The bandwidth is always greener on the other side of the firewall.
  • E-mail, Twitter, and Facebook are three best friends and three worst enemies.
  • People who live in glass houses shouldn’t check their address on Google Street View.
  • A fool and his passwords are soon parted.
  • He’s 10 bits short of a byte.

3. Hat day for Haiti is on Friday, January 22nd (bring $1 wear a hat)

What happened in Core?!?! January 12th & 13th

Ahoy Core Mateys.

Miss class? Fall asleep? Hopefully you didn't fall asleep in class, in all honesty that would make me feel pretty sad because our class is pretty exciting at times...and of course I'd have to have a consequence for sleeping through something so incredibly, wondrously, thrillingly awesome.

Anyhoo.

January 12 (yesterday):
  • Book Boxes were due and we heard some smashing (yes, smashing is a good thing) presentations about a wide variety of science fiction and fantasy books.  I was incredibly impressed with the use of literal and inferential comprehension demonstrated during the presentations yesterday. A job well done by all who presented!
  • Writing Assessment 101: last day of reviewing the expectations for the district writing assessment
January 13 (today):
  • Reading log due was today!
  • New reading log was handed out and is due on January 20, 2010
  • Heard quite a few awesome book box presentations by those students that had used a homework coupon yesterday.
  • Writing assessment started

    • Is it a good idea to end a story with "and then I woke up" or "the end" NOOOO!
    • Our writing assessment starts at the end of the week

    • Presentations will also take place on TUESDAY
    • Remember to have 10 items and descriptions

Today in Core: January 6th

Language Arts:
1. New Reading Log!!! This trimester the reading log is as much about WRITING as it is about READING.  In addition to recording 150 minutes each week of reading, students will be required to answer at least 2 reading response questions each week.  Parent signature is still required to receive full credit.  Magazines and newspapers are considered acceptable reading material and students are allowed to count up to 30 minutes each week of online reading (this includes social networking and email).

2. Today we journeyed to the library to check out a general fiction book. Minimum of 200 pages (or at your reading level), no series, books that are movies, books you've had read to you or read before, Twilight, Harry Potter, Series of Unfortunate Events, Lord of the Rings (while these are fantastic books, I want students to venture past them for this book project).  Book needs to be finished by Februar 6th.

Resolutions project is due FRIDAY
