This Week: September 24-28th

Happy Monday to all!

This week, students will begin studying landforms and earth's physical features. We will also be looking at maps and map making. Students will begin the Create a Continent project on Friday (hopefully), which will ask them to create a map of a fictional continent that shows the different types of landforms. Current event #2 will be assigned on Thursday and is due on October 5th.

In Language Arts, we are working on spelling. The first spelling test will be TUESDAY SEPT 25th! On this day, the spelling practice sheet and spelling sort it are due. In addition to spelling, students should be READING! The first reading log is due this Wednesday. New spelling words will be recorded on Wednesday and spelling test #2 will be October 4th.

This week marks the first week that students will meet for leveled reading classes. AM students will have reading on A days, 3rd period, and PM students will have reading 4th period on B days.

Today's Class: 9-17-07

Federal law mandates that all social studies classrooms in publicly funded schools in the United States must teach a lesson on the Constitution on September 17th each year. September 17, 2007 is the 220th anniversary of the day the constitution was signed. With this in mind, part of class today was devoted to discussing Article 2: Executive Branch, and then looking at how the Constitution has changed since 9/17/1787. Classes also worked with the Bill of Rights.

Today's writing warm-up: Write an 8 line dialogue between a shoe and a sock

Hope everyone had a great weekend (I did, the beach was lovely and the Beavs dominated Idaho at the game Saturday. Good job to the Ducks also, who beat Fresno State), I look forward to seeing parents at Back to School Night Thursday September 2oth!!!

Today's Class: September 14th

Students had time to finish their reading assessment. Assessments will be graded this weekend and students will be placed in their leveled reading classes by Wednesday of next week.

After completing the assessment, students participated in "fun write Friday" which looked at using the senses to enhance one's writing and improving dialogue in stories.

The cool thing of the day today was Google Earth, a link can be found on the Miss B website.

Remember to read this weekend (reading log #1 due 9-26), and begin your current event assignment (due next Friday).

Have a great weekend!

Today's Class: September 13th

Current Events, Reading Assessments and Reading Logs: Oh My!

Current Event #1 was introduced, and is due on Friday, September 21st, iit is worth 50 points. For a copy of the current event assignment click here. For a list of helpful current events links, click here.

In addition, students took the reading assessment which will help the 6th grade teachers place students in the appropriate leveled reading class next week. Students will receive their reading placements next week and parents will be able to meet reading teachers at back to school night on Thursday Sept 21st.

There is quite a bit of confusion surrounding the independent reading log. Students can begin reading and recording their minutes at any time. But the first week's log is not due until September 26th. If a student were to read their 150 minutes this weekend, they would be covered for the week's log.

Writing warm-up: What is your favorite after school activity? Explain.

Today's Class: September 12th

Today in class, students worked on the letter to Miss B assignment, and turned in their personal geography assignments. Both classes had 20 minutes of silent reading time. AM discussed the question, "why write".

Writing warm up for Sept 11th: Would you rather be in a play or be in the audience at a play?
Writing warm up for Sept 12th: 3 minute, list making drills (see a friend for topics)

Today's Class: September 10th

Ahoy, and welcome to yer second week of school young pirates!

In all honesty, I have been pleasantly surprised and impressed by your good behavior and eagerness to learn new things (I hope that doesn't change!!)

Students are working hard on their personal geography project, by creating either a map explaining the whereabouts of all the important places in their lives, or a chart depicting how the five themes of geography are connected to them personally. Tomorrow, students will travel the library to explore the ways in which computers are your classroom friends.

Today's writing warm-up prompt: In at least 4 sentences, describe the strangest food that you have ever eaten. Why was it strange?

If you were absent today, be sure to copy down this week's planner entries from a friend or the Miss B website!
